History of Método Benozzi®

Dr. Jorge Benozzi

From his early training in Belgium, Dr. Jorge Benozzi devoted himself to research, focusing mainly on glaucoma, and published numerous medical research articles over the years.

Although the idea of a pharmacological treatment for presbyopia was still far off, all of this formative experience opened the door to a new treatment.

At the time, hard as it may be to believe, medications that could solve presbyopia already existed — but they were used to treat other conditions.

Almost 20 years later, when he began having trouble with his own near vision, it occurred to him that the very drug he had used for years to treat another condition — which improved near vision but worsened distance and intermediate vision — might be the solution.

The goal was to modify how the medication worked so it would improve vision at every distance, allowing comfortable vision (far, intermediate and near) and doing away with the need for glasses.

That same year he began treating himself, his colleagues and his friends with a combination of medications that had already been used in ophthalmology since the 1960s to treat other conditions.

The results in the patients treated were wonderful: not only did they no longer need to wear glasses, but their presbyopia — which, left untreated, keeps progressing — had stopped advancing.

After many refinements and adjustments, development of an eye drop began in 2003, followed by its patent in the European Union in 2006.

In 2009, a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals was formed, led by Dr. Giovanna Benozzi, to continue the research — a path that continues to this day.

All of this accumulated experience has allowed us to develop a successful pharmacological treatment for presbyopia, reflected in the thousands of patients treated over the years with excellent results.
