Pharmacological Treatments for Presbyopia
We are specialists in presbyopia.
Presbyopia, also known as “farsightedness” or “aging eye,” is a common visual disorder affecting many people as they age. It generally starts between the ages of 40 and 45 and is characterized by difficulty focusing on close objects.
Presbyopia not only impacts quality of life but also has significant economic productivity implications. Presbyopia limits the ability to perform everyday tasks such as reading a cellphone, working at a desk, or using digital devices. Moreover, using reading glasses, which only correct for one focal distance, can be uncomfortable and problematic, leading 40% of patients to seek alternatives.
Currently, there are several strategies to correct presbyopia, including optical treatments such as glasses or contact lenses. Another option is pharmacological treatment with eye drops (Método Benozzi®), which allows for accommodation rehabilitation, enabling focus at all distances without the need for glasses. For more advanced presbyopia, surgical options such as laser treatments or the placement of intraocular lenses are often effective.
